Short answer: from Hilo or Volcano village, drive yourself; it is about an hour. From Kona or Waikoloa, a guided tour or an overnight near the park beats a 6-hour round-trip drive after a long day.

If you are staying in Kona
A day trip works but it is not ideal: leave early, keep stops short, and expect to get back after dark. That is why Kona tours run long. The group tours we found run 8 hours (with stops at Punaluʻu Bake Shop and Rainbow Falls) to 11 or 12 hours (adding Mauna Kea stargazing on the way back).
The upside of a tour from Kona: you sleep in the van on the way home instead of driving home in the dark.
If you are staying in Hilo
You are close enough to go whenever the eruption picks up. That flexibility matters: lava episodes last hours and the timing shifts. See lava viewing.
The overnight option
Staying a night near the park, such as at Volcano House inside it, turns a rushed day into an easy one and lets you see the crater after dark.
